Rape and Serious sexual offences

Leeds Crown Court - R v LS (2016) - defended a male accused of raping a female student, as she slept after drinking a substantial quantity of alcohol.

Leeds Crown Court - R v AF (2016) - defended male accused of rape of 1 adult female complainant and sexual assault of another, 5 years apart and both while they slept.

Leeds Crown Court - R v KF (2016) - defended male accused of sexual assault of child age 6. Case involved section 28 Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act 1999 pre-recorded cross-examination.

Bradford Crown Court - Operation Kellerabbey (2015) - defended one of 15 young male defendants in a child sex exploitation case where the defendants were jointly charged with multiple offences of rape of a female under 16.  Case involved vulnerable witness who required an intermediary.

Sheffield Crown Court - R v EP and LP (2014 - 2015) - prosecuted 2 Slovakian brothers accused of sexually abusing 3 child complainants.

Leeds Crown Court - R v CC (2014) - prosecuted non-recent allegation of oral rape on male child complainant.  Defendant had been a celebrity in a popular soap opera.

Derby Crown Court - R v PB (2014) - defended elderly male accused of non- recent male rape (1968 – 1969) and gross indecency.

York Crown Court - R v SB (2014) - defended 1 of 2 males charged with raping a female who had been too drunk to recall the incident.

Grimsby Crown Court - R v RP & AA (2013) - Defended one of two Lithuanian defendants charged with violently raping a sex worker in Grimsby Town Centre.  Both defendants were acquitted.

Hull Crown Court - R v TS (2013) - prosecuted a historical sex case concerning buggery.  The complainant had, since the offences, committed many offences and in conjunction with the defendant.  The defendant was convicted.

Hull Crown Court - R v BS (2013) - prosecuted a defendant charged with sex offences dating from 1986 to 2009, relating to 4 different complainants.

Leeds Crown Court - R v YH (2013) - successfully defended a client charged with rape of a female at a party.  This case involved the prosecution relying on the defendant’s many inconsistent accounts given in police interviews to demonstrate him as an incredible witness.  An expert was called on his behalf to give evidence about the defendant’s poor memory following a brain injury, to account for his tendency to give inconsistent accounts.

Bradford Crown Court - R v SA (2012) - successfully defended a male charged with rape and false imprisonment of his girlfriend.

Derby Crown Court - R v KS (2012) - successfully defended a client accused of sexual offences alleged to have been committed against his sister when he was a teenager.

Derby Crown Court - R v TR (2011) - successfully defended a client charged with raping a female as she slept.  He could recall nothing of the incident, although he accepted he had been present in her bed at the time.

Derby Crown Court - R v KW (2009) - defended a male who pleaded guilty to raping 4 adult female complainants.

York Crown Court - R v JB (2005) - successfully defended a male accused of oral, vaginal and anal rape, when the defence was sleepwalking.  This required calling a sleepwalking expert.

Immigration/people trafficking

Leeds Crown Court - R v G, A and I (2012) - Sham Marriages between Pakistani nationals and Lithuanian nationals.

Grimsby Crown Court - R v  Z and K (2011) - prosecuted 2 Lithuanian nationals accused of the trafficking and rape of Lithuanian females.

Fraud and Dishonesty Offences

Hull Crown Court - Operation Isobar (2016) - prosecuted case involving a conspiracy to burgle, 6 defendants and over 25 burglaries. Case involved substantial amount of cell site and mobile telephone call data.

Bradford Crown Court - R v CP and LD - (2016) prosecuted case involving high value, sophisticated targeting of commercial premises. 

Leeds Crown Court - R v CH (2015) - defended a female charged jointly with 5 others with conspiracy to burgle involving numerous burglaries.  Evidence included cell site data, mobile telephone traffic, ANPR data, CCTV footage and eye witnesses.

York Crown Court - R v (2014 - 2015) - defended male accused of high value theft from employer when working as manager in well-known store.

Bradford Crown Court - R v ZA (2013)  Operation Kingfisher - defendant of good character, charged with conspiracy to defraud Kirklees CC and mortgage fraud.

York Crown Court - R v B and others (2012) - prosecuted 8 defendants charged with conspiracy to steal copper.

York Crown Court - R v  B and B (2012) - prosecuted 2 defendants, charged with conspiracy to burgle.  The evidence largely included cell-site analysis for mobile telephones and ANPR data.

Bradford Crown Court - R v AG (2011) - defended  a male jointly charged with another male with conspiracy to defraud.  The fraud related to the defendant obtaining credit and monetary transfers from different banks.

Bradford Crown Court - R v B and others (2009) - prosecuted 11 defendants charged with conspiracy to steal by making fraudulent money transfers and using stolen cheques.

Leeds Crown Court - R v S and others (2006) - prosecuted 7 defendants, accused of conspiracy to burgle over a 2 year period.

Violent offences

Hull Crown Court - R v PS - currently instructed to prosecute (junior alone) a male charged with the murder of two adults.

Bradford Crown Court - R v MJ (2016) - defended male accused of running over a male complainant and then launching into attack with weapons jointly with 3 others.

Leeds Crown Court - R v C (2016) - defended male accused of aggravated burglary, entering a flat with another unknown male, using violence and threatening female complainant with a knife.

Bradford Crown Court - R v MO (2016) - defended C male jointly charged with another male with attempted murder, possession of an offensive weapon and possession of a bladed article.  Case involved 2 males using a ruse to obtain entry into the female complainant’s home and repeatedly stabbing her in front of child witnesses.

Leeds Crown Court - R v SH and 2 others (2016) - defended a male in trial of three males accused of possession prohibited firearm and ammunition.

Leeds Crown Court - R v JB (2015) - defended (led) young male, jointly charged with 4 others with murder and violent disorder.

Leeds Crown Court - R v LS (2015) - defended (led) young male jointly charged with 2 others with manslaughter.  Case involved whether an intervening act was the cause of death.

Derby Crown Court - R v HC (2105) - defended a female jointly charged with a male accused of causing child to suffer serious physical harm, contrary to section 5 of the Domestic Crime Victims Act 2004.  Case involved a child aged 9 months and numerous medical experts dealing with causation of serious injuries including a skull fracture.

York Crown Court - Operation Cherry (2014-2015) - prosecuted 6 males accused of conspiracy to rob G4S staff when transporting/collecting cash from Banks in the York Area.  Evidence included cell site data, mobile telephone traffic, ANPR data, tracker data and CCTV footage.

Hull Crown Court - R v BW (2014) - defended elderly male accused of wounding female complainant in a public house.

Bradford Crown Court - R v DJ (2012) - charged with Causing Grievous bodily harm with intent and supplying class A drugs.  Defendant pleaded guilty to the drugs offences but was acquitted on after a trial of the section 18 matter; despite bad character evidence for violence and his convictions for drug offences being adduced at trial.  The evidence included cell-site analysis for mobile telephones.

Hull Crown Court  - R v PS (2012) - represented a client charged with attempted murder but pleaded guilty to section 18, wounding with intent, n relation to a repeated stabbing of his ex-partner.

York Crown Court - R v KM (2012) - successfully defended a client charged with child cruelty. Following obtaining a psychologist’s report (prepared for concurrent family court proceedings) to explain that she was incapable rather than wilful in her failures in parenting, the prosecution offered no evidence.

Leeds Crown Court - R v JR (2012) - defended client charged with 4 others in relation to kidnapping, false imprisoment and possession of firearms.

Sheffield Crown Court - R v MC - defended a female care worker, accused of assaulting a male resident in a care home, who lacked capacity.

Leeds Crown Court - R v SB (and 3 others) (2010) - defended a Romanian National accused of conspiring to rob a jewellery shop.

Grimsby Crown Court - R v AT (2009) - prosecuted a male defendant for causing grievous bodily harm to a 3-year-old child.  This required calling the child, who was 4 years old at the time of the trial.

Bradford Crown Court - R v M and others (2009) - leading prosecution counsel in case relating to gang violence involving 13 defendants.

York Crown Court - R v AG (2006) - defended a female charged with numerous assaults committed against her sister-in-law, who she kept as a naked slave in her home.

Leeds Crown Court - R v MH (2005) - led junior for male defendant who murdered four people.

Drug Offences  and POCA proceedings

York Crown Court - R v LD (2016) - defended male student accused of being in possession of cannabis with intent to supply and supplying cannabis.

Bradford Crown Court - R v CS (2016) - defended male student accused of being in possession of class A drugs (ecstasy) with intent to supply.

Burnley Crown Court  - Operation Kaitlyn (2014 – 2015) - defended one of 6 males, in a case involving a joint West Yorkshire/Lancashire operation for conspiracy to supply class A controlled drugs and possession of prohibited firearms.  The voluminous evidence included surveillance, cell site data, telephone traffic data and ANPR data.

Hull Crown Court - R v AE (2014 - 2015) - defended adult female jointly charged on indictment with 12 others with possession class B controlled drug (amphetamine) with intent to supply. Case involved surveillance evidence, cell site data and mobile telephone traffic.

Hull Crown Court  - R v JK (2012) - following prosecuting and securing the conviction of the defendant for production of cannabis after a trial, the POCA proceedings involved the confiscation of nearly £1 million of assets.  Resisted an abuse of process argument from the defence.

York Crown Court - R v H (2012) - prosecuted POCA proceedings following conviction for production of cannabis. 

Grimsby Crown Court - R v R and W (2012) - prosecuted a couple who were convicted of producing cannabis in their home.

Bradford Crown Court - R v YBK (2012) - successfully defended a client charged with production of cannabis, whose fingerprints were on numerous pieces of growing equipment.

York Crown Court - R v RG (2012)  - defended a male defendant, café owner, who had produced cannabis in his café and his home.

Bradford Crown Court - R v RE (2011) - successfully defended a client (jointly charged with 6 others) charged with possession of class A drugs with intent to supply.  The client’s house had been under surveillance by the police for some time and her house was said to have been used to store the large quantity of heroin and crack cocaine found within it.  The evidence included cell-site analysis for mobile telephones.

Bolton Crown Court - R v JF  (2007) - successfully defendant client accused of possession of heroin and crack cocaine with intent to supply.  In addition to the drugs found in her home, the evidence related to a large number of cash deposits into her bank account.

Court Martial

Catterick Court Martial Centre - R v KGN J-L (2016) - defended KGN charged with desertion.

Colchester Court Martial Centre - R v LC (2014) -  defended soldier accused of sexual assault, assault, conduct prejudicial to good order and discipline and disgraceful conduct of a cruel and indecent kind.

Catterick Court Martial Centre (2013) - defended soldier accused of domestic violence.
