Peter Yates

Peter acts for both prosecution and defence. He practises in the Magistrates’ Courts in relation to a range of offences, including violence, drugs, sexual offences, theft and public order matters, and has conducted large numbers of trials, sentencing hearings and first appearances. Peter is also developing a practice in the Crown Court, and has acted in appeals, sentencing hearings, bail applications and ancillary hearings.  

Prior to starting the BPTC, Peter was part of the Law Commission’s criminal law team. The team, led by Professor David Ormerod QC, has responsibility for recommending reform to the criminal law. Peter worked on the projects on contempt of court, hate crime and kidnapping. Peter has also contributed research to Smith and Hogan’s Criminal Law, the leading textbook in the field.
