Howard Shaw

Howard practises in Criminal Law, defending and prosecuting all manner of cases in the full range of criminal courts. He has represented appellants many times in the Court of Appeal and has dealt with a number of Appeals by Case Stated before the Administrative Court.

He routinely deals with serious crime including serious assaults, public order matters, firearms offences, drug trafficking offences, sexual offences, arson, burglary and fraud.

He also regularly deals with a range of regulatory matters, having been instructed in a number of cases involving food hygiene offences, health and safety matters and environmental offences, where technical scientific issues were involved.

Howard has extensive experience in dealing with benefit fraud offences and Trading Standards matters.

A case involving the statutory interpretation of complicated football banning order legislation
R v William Ainscow [2003] EWCA Crim 1508
Represented the elderly appellant in his appeal against sentence in the Court of Appeal. He ran a post office and stole a number of pension order books, which he subsequently cashed, in order to finance the upkeep of his daughter who suffered from Asperger's Syndrome. The case became the subject of a television documentary drama.

Successfully represented a senior police officer charged with Theft.
R v James Norwood (2010 Teesside Crown Court)
Represented a man charged with Aggravated Vehicle Taking and Criminal Damage Being Reckless as to Whether Life was Endangered. The case involved allegations that tins of dog food and Pot Noodles had been thrown from the back of a van at pursuing police vehicles during a high speed chase on the A1.
R v Masood Akbar (2010 - Grimsby Crown Court)
Successfully represented a man in his appeal against conviction for Careless Driving, where the prosecution evidence was solely that of police officers.

Prosecuted three young men involved in a very serious assault on a man, who was left unconscious and naked.
R v Sasha Lee Gaudet (2010 - Leeds Crown Court)
Prosecuted a woman for Dangerous Driving and drink driving, following an accident in which she drove into a female cyclist, who suffered very serious life changing injuries.
R v Stuart Dixon (2010 - Leeds Crown Court)
Prosecuted a man for setting fire to his high rise flat. The case was unusual in that he had been legally insane at the time of the offence, but had made a full recovery by the time of the court hearing.
